This dissertation analyses representations of femininity and feminist narratives in Legally Blonde (Luketic, 2001) and Mean Girls (Waters, 2004), against the theoretical frame of Feminism in film. This dissertation will explore each film’s representations of feminism and feminist politics and their place as films which were written by and largely marketed towards women. With a focus on Third-Wave Feminism, this dissertation analyses the extent to which both film’s characters and narratives express feminist ideals. I will produce a critical analysis, supported by feminist theory, as to whether the film’s female characters, representations of women, and narratives are able to be considered feminist representations of feminism and female empowerment.
