This report explores the increase in ceramics in contemporary fine art and the relationship between functionality, traditions, and art practice. Through close critical analysis of the art of Peter Voulkos, Jesse Wine, Emma Hart, and Serena Korda this report found a blurring of boundaries between art and craft. Through the use of Danto’s new art theory with Markowitz’s amendments this report analysed the artwork and the artistic practices to discover the use of both art and craft traditions enabling this division to be removed and both practices integrated. This was most prevalent in Grayson Perry’s work however it was found that due to the nature of ceramics and the innate functionality, it was relevant throughout.
