What if? An exploration into the ethical and market-based implications and benefits of a legal rhinoceros horn trade

Purpose: To investigate the limitations and benefits of a theoretical rhinoceros horn trade and what the level of acceptance may be if it were to be implemented.

Methodology: The methodology included a review of existing literature which was followed by semi-structured interviews which were analysed alongside relevant websites using thematic analysis.

Findings: The findings captured the complexity of relative and absolute opinions regarding rhinoceros horn trade. It highlighted the difficulty of acceptance to such an invasive method, as well as the fluidity of perception within a moral standpoint.

Research Limitations: Much of the existing literature heavily details the experience of rhinoceros from poaching. However, there were limited sources with regards to rhinoceros horn trade as this is a new concept which is not yet implemented. Alternatively, there were plenty of resources available for ethics within business settings, to corporations and the individual worker. Furthermore, interviews completed represent a small sample of views over a global problem.

Practical Implications: Internet dependent tools for video and voice calls were used which for some candidates based farther meant experiencing a few distortions in the quality of call that may have affected the flow of these particular interviews.

Originality/Value: With rhinoceros horn trade being a new concept to many, there a few sources that explore both implications and benefits of such a method and more explanation will be required.
