In this dissertation, Belfast- in the context of a contested city and its progression towards social sustainability and cohesion, have been examined.
This work aims to assess the progress through time and understand the journey that Belfast has gone through as a contested city and to consider what can be done to reach a more socially sustainable future. This feeds into the debate surrounding the use of physical barriers in contested spaces, particularly using ‘peace walls’ in Belfast and assessing the need for their existence in the urban landscape.
