This thesis will explore the question: How can the work of the cinematographer bring the screenplay to life?
The thesis explores what the relationship between the cinematographer and the writer is like within filmmaking, this is partially due to the unusual role combination of co-writer and cinematographer found on this project. The discussion is revolved around research, technical and creative analysis of the product and an insight into the production process. The research is grounded through its deep dive into industry practitioners within the field of cinematography and screenwriting and how their experiences have informed, impacted, and aided the production process of The Ghost & The Girl. There is a focus onto the role of the cinematographer, this is due a desire to pursue a career in this field after university. The body of the thesis provides an insight into the production workflow of an aspiring DOP, and thus
delved deeper into the thought processes such as how the visual language of the film was developed. The question posed for the title of this thesis, seems straight forward enough, but through the research it became clear this answer is not all as it seems. The content of the thesis provides a perceptiveness into what the relationship between the cinematographer and writer could be, although it is not an industry standard practice. Throughout this thesis the role title: cinematographer and DOP (director of photography) are interchanged but used fluidly.
