A quarter of UK adults say that in general, work causes them stress, with 18% saying that their workloads make them feel stressed out. (ciphr, 2021 ). Construction is one of the most stressful sectors to work in, with findings showing that 4 out of 5 construction workers feel stressed at least some of the time in their typical working week. (CITB, 2019). There is also a ‘macho’ culture within the construction industry. An extensive literature review has been undertaken in order to highlight some of the key causes of stress, the effects of stress, and any coping mechanisms and strategies within the UK Construction Industry. This study uses a quantitative methodology, with a survey-based questionnaire having been distributed in order to gain data from Construction Project Managers on what they feel causes them stress, and what coping mechanisms and strategies they use and find effective. This is followed by a descriptive analysis of the findings. Recommendations have been put together based off the findings of the research, which aim to target stress both at an organisational level and at a personal level. It would be recommended that employers and employees adopt some of the recommendations set out as it will allow for a more open culture where mental health and wellbeing is not a taboo subject.
