Since its conception during the French New Wave, much theorising and debate has been arisen about what makes a filmmaker an auteur. Due to the highly subjective nature of filmmaking and the fact that great storytellers can come from anywhere, it has been challenging to pinpoint how an auteur is made. However, what is not debateable is that filmmaking, at its core, is a collaborative art form and so with this in mind this thesis will attempt to understand: How do collaborations within the film industry lead to the development of an Auteur?
I will answer this question by analysing the directorial process of Father’s Day (Klos, 2024). Tracking it from preproduction through to post. It is the aim of the thesis to establish how a personal style can be developed by the director and the that facilitate it. This will provide the understanding of the collaborative aspects of filmmaking that a method for making films can be developed and applied to an expanding body of work.
