This dissertation is a piece of creative writing in fulfilment of the Final Major Project for BA (Hons) Creative Writing.

Beatrice held a ribbon in her hand. It was a dusty lilac, similar to the dress she was wearing, and slid between her fingers. She pondered how the shade would look in her curls, if it would clash too much with her dress or bring it together. Her eyes wandered to the pine counter, lips parted in a building question. But Mrs. Walker was busy with pencils, drawing wide curves and lots of straight lines, and Beatrice decided not to bother her.

She moved away to a selection of lace ribbons by the window and her gaze caught the clouds outside. They had grown over the last half-hour and gathered into one dark mass over the city. Beatrice cast a curious look at a drop of rain that splashed onto the window. She wondered if it was the dull weather of England, or if Edward was sulking again. Perhaps she should pay him a visit soon.

‘How about this one, Miss Hayward?’

Her maid stood nearby, waiting for Beatrice’s attention. She was a few inches shorter than Beatrice, with a round face and gentle eyes. Blonde hair was pulled into a low bun, and in her hands was a soft, yellow ribbon. The edges were laced, and it was a nice, subtle colour amongst a sea of vibrant shades.
