The development of synchronised sound for films was a game-changing phenomenon that has continued to influence modern filmmakers. The relationship between sync sound and early horror films has been explored throughout the 20th century. However, critical reviews of sound cinema from a contemporaneous audience have often been neglected in favour of studies into cinematography and production design (Beck, 2010, 11). This research aims to investigate the overall impact sound had on the emergence of horror as a genre, whilst analysing how early 20th-century filmmakers used sound to provoke fear in their audiences. This chapter will provide an introduction by outlining the background of the study, identifying limitations in the research, and indicating the aims and objectives of the study.
