I have chosen this topic to study and investigate further, as I believe it is an extremely relevant and important topic currently. While writing this dissertation, the conflicts are still ongoing, and it will be interesting to expand on my ideas as and when something happens. As this is a current topic, it will be essential to stay observant towards mainstream media and news sources, in order to understand this topic fully, and often, speak through experience about the type ofinformation that has been given to the public. Although I will be speaking about my experience of the type of content that can be found on different platforms, I will use the research I have found to support anything I state. Because of this still being a relevant topic, a reasonable amount of my research has been extracted from news articles or information that the public can access on a daily basis. I also believe that in order to investigate this topic thoroughly and effectively, it is necessary to study the history of war reporting and examine how this has changed over time. I believe that much of the research extends far past the sole idea of war and gives us an idea of how the general media has changed over time, whether this is the shift to citizen/social media journalism, or how there is a general awareness of the restrictions within the media and what they can access.
My second chapter will evaluate President Zelensky’s, the President of Ukraine’s, use of the social media and messaging platform, Telegram, and I will investigate whether these posts can be completely trusted, and whether this method of communication is effective and the best it could possibly be. I have taken specific posts from his account to convey and support my ideas for this. The closing chapter will look specifically into Forensic Architecture, a research agency based at Goldsmiths. Their main focus is to “investigate human rights violations including violence committed by states, police forces, militaries, and corporations.” (NGO Monitor, 2024) I will explore certain case studies from Forensic Architecture to show what they do and expand on my ideas on how media has changed over time. A key book in this chapter will be Fuller and Weizman’s ‘Investigative Aesthetics,’ which also explains certain examples from Forensic Architecture.
