Creative writing final major project – Jack in a box

  • Year of Publication:
  • 2024

This dissertation is a piece of creative writing in fulfilment of the Final Major Project for BA (Hons) Creative Writing.

On the 15th of April 2024, this collection, Jack In A Box, was presented in a seminar room on the University of Lincoln Brayford Campus. The work was organised into a gallerylike arrangement. The pieces were placed on tables around the edges of the room, while The Jacket was draped on a chair in the centre, and Brother Video was playing on a projector screen. I performed Emotionally Compromised in front of the projector screen every 20 minutes and Moth-ridden Eye-contact was presented via a repeating audio recording through headphones. The audience consisted of my family members, close friends, and my Final Major Project (FMP) supervisor, Fee Griffin. Audience members were asked prior to the event if they were comfortable to be in photographs.

My pitch for this collection was as follows: My final major project will be an amalgamation of various forms of poetry. Hopefully to be displayed in a room, the collection will contain object poems, written work and spoken word/performance poetry. I’d like to focus on hidden thought processes and emotions. My aim for this collection is for the viewers to see aspects of themselves in the pieces. I am inspired by Tracey Emins various textile pieces, specifically her tent, as well as other poets such as Serge Neptune and Sharon Olds.

The video and audio components of this collection were emailed to Fee Griffin prior to the due date of this assessment. These consisted of an audio recording of Moth-ridden Eyecontact, the links to Brother Video and a performance of Emotionally Compromised from the event. This document contains the work presented, accompanied by photos taken at the event.
