Their legs were tucked under a long wooden table carved with initials tattooed on phalluses. Amelia slumped against Laura, watching her scroll through her phone. After showing her the fifth outfit combination from the selection of her mother’s clothes, Amelia agreed the first one looked best. Both girls were hidden by their tote bags stacked on the table in front.

‘We’ve been looking for you. Both of you.’ Daniel pushed the bags apart and sat opposite.

‘This about Will’s free house tonight?’ Laura passed her phone to Amelia.

‘He’s braver than me. His Gran must be away for the weekend.’ Daniel reached for Amelia’s hand.

‘Your dad would never.’ Amelia laughed as she stroked his knuckle. The empty canteen echoed with their chatter until the others trailed in to lean on various parts of the table. They weaved through the upturned chairs to avoid the chunks of rock-hard chewing gum plastered around them. There were too many conversations to process while everyone spoke about the drinks they were taking, whether their parents knew. Amelia glanced around while picking at a small ladder in her tights until it gaped open. Daniel placed his hand on her thigh and squeezed in a pattern of three, it was a way of him showing his love, that Amelia refused to participate in, in public.
