Creative writing final major project – forsaken mercy

This dissertation is a piece of creative writing in fulfilment of the Final Major Project for BA (Hons) Creative Writing.

The first time I went hunting with my Papá he had to console me for hours afterwards as I cried over the body of the deer he had shot. He explained to me then that the animal felt no pain, no fear, because he had never even seen the bullet coming – and he was a hell of a shot, my father. One bullet through the skull and it was lights out. Since then, I have always thought going out unexpectedly, without a chance for the mind to process that it’s dying, would be the best way to go. In a split second you’re gone, and there’s no pain or prolonging, just temporary euphoria and then… nothing.

I would have given anything for that.
