Creative writing final major project – the things between us

This dissertation is a piece of creative writing in fulfilment of the Final Major Project for BA (Hons) Creative Writing.

Adrian fidgeted in his seat, pale fingers buried in the battery compartment of his blue Polaroid. It was a birthday gift from his mate, Liam, that he got last week, along with two packets of film. Something practical in time for the local photography competition. The prompt: something strange.

Adrian was quite lanky for eleven. Clumsy too, with unbrushed red hair and freckles scattered all over his pale face. Both were echoed in his sister, Hannah, who fiddled with her fairy doll the whole ride. He was stuck next to her in the back of the car, where she babbled about seeing otters and whacked him with the doll while his foster parents were safe up front. It was a stupid thing, with a dopey smile and glittery wings.

She had a fairy door in her bedroom, which was just a piece of pink cardboard stuck to her wall. She liked reminding Adrian that she saw it open once when she was meant to be asleep. So, Adrian pointed out a new word that he had learnt – delusional – before he ripped it off the wall and showed her it was all fake. He couldn’t understand why Hannah cried so much or why Louise was so mad at him. She was the one who told him that he should always tell the truth.
