This report set out to understand how the aesthetics of an artist’s work can be impacted by the political atmosphere that they are creating work in. By analysing the use of colour, imagery and technology used by artists Hito Steyerl, Hassan Elahi and Vito Acconci this report concludes that an artist’s race, gender, and geopolitical atmosphere does in fact affect the aesthetic quality of their work. It considers their background, important context of the time and new technologies. It also concludes that the artist use of aesthetics brings into question how the governing bodies are using this technology and that it could be considered unlawful by their own standards.
