Assessing university responses to student drug use: the impact of student led campaigns on harm reduction

Refined to the United Kingdom, this dissertation is eager to investigate the responsiveness of universities to the pressing issue of student drug use and how they attempt to handle this in their respective policy frameworks. With a history of overlooking completely or otherwise unfairly punishing, in both cases university students have been left exposed to harms the drugs being used most extensively foster. From this, since being recognized for fulfilling a critical role in holding their institutions accountable, pinpointing areas where they continue to fall short in their approach, and often having to compensate for it, any well-informed judgements will be reached once the experience of students who have avidly campaigned for the implementation of harm reduction initiatives and a sensible student drug policy have been learned of. By doing so through the completion of semi-structured interviews, the indisputable impact student-led advocacy groups which participants of this research belong to are having in terms of pushing their universities into an increasingly supportive and educative policy direction can then be confidently stated. In line with this, the dissertation shall conclude by placing a firm emphasis on a multitude of recommendations for universities to follow which are equally connected in their advising for institutions to better listen to their students and ensure they are actively involving them in future drug policy discussions moving forward.
