Is ecofeminism defensible in the context of contemporary gender theory and feminist ethical study?

Within this dissertation I will investigate the doctrine of ecofeminism, examining and evaluating it in relation to cultures and demographics from around the world and their perspectives on gender theory. The motif of environmental care is beginning to, or at least should, infiltrate the majority of areas within contemporary philosophy; pairing this with feminist thought has revolutionised the trajectory of environmental philosophy, but is this necessarily for the better? I aim in this essay to tackle one of the issues arising from the cross section between ecofeminism and the evolving landscape of gender theory and contemporary feminist theory, to forward a specific version of the doctrine that is compatible with contemporary gender theory.

The first part of the essay will consist of a discussion on what feminism means as a philosophical concept, contrasting varying definitions with the aim of reaching a clear conclusion on which aspects of feminism are common to all, or at least most, versions of the doctrine. The second issue I intend to explore in this essay is that of ecofeminism’s response to trans issues and the broad scope of gender identity entering academic discussion.
