The intention of this dissertation is to analyse and understand why ‘Last Night of the Proms’ has a problematic reputation. Using the basis of David Cannadine’s comments of the show, I will explore the ways in which patriotism and traditions affect the consensus. The argument I put forward is that the perception ‘Last Night of the Proms’ is at odds with the reality. Much of the music promotes ideas that are incongruous to the authorial intent. My aim is to show why ‘Last Night of the Proms’ fails as a tradition that supports patriotism and needs re-evaluation.
