This thesis will focus on the question: How can the processes of adaptation and appropriation influence the process of writing a feature length screenplay? I will start by introducing my key concepts of adaptation and appropriation, analysing what they mean in different theoretical contexts and points of view, cross examining them with each other and my own perspectives on the processes of adaptation and appropriation, and how they may be influenced by these studies. The thesis will then explore different examples of adaptation and appropriation from throughout cinema, and how often it can be seen as a subconscious process in some instances. I specifically focus on my own process of adaptation and appropriation in the construction of my feature length screenplay Overgrowth, and how it changed with influence from Slavic folklore and mythology, inspired by other titles that use folklore such as The Ritual (2017), ultimately arguing that these processes are beneficial for the writer, and not something to be apprehensive of.
