For this thesis, I wanted to examine the relationship between the dystopian film and the usage of sound, questioning how exactly the sound relates to and informs the creation of these dystopian atmospheres, and how I can use these discoveries to inform my own practice in the creation of my graduation film, the dystopian thriller Faded Sky. Through analysing a variety of different dystopian films, whilst referencing numerous authors on the topics in question, I was able to compile a comprehensive overview of different examples of dystopian sound design and music. Although my research does not find an overtly recognisable style for the sound of dystopia, there are nonetheless numerous elements that recur throughout these films which have clear reasons for their uses in relation to their genre. These decisions proved crucial to informing my choices for the sound design of our final film, for which I was able to apply a variety of the techniques that I learned from my research which I believe came to a good level of success.
